Embedding sustainability in higher education culture
In order to effectively promote climate change and sustainability throughout the university, many members and areas must work together: scientists and students, university operations and administration, site managers, faculty and the Executive Board. Coordinated action is key to major benefits in an operational context and also in education, research and knowledge transfer.
FAU is aware of its position as a role model and embraces its responsibility for shaping a world that is fair on a global scale and across all generations. For this reason, “sustainability” has been made a cross-sectional topic with a strong focus on ecologically sound action and climate protection. Strategical responsibility for this cross-sectional topic lies with our Sustainability Officer, who is supported by the sustainability committee, while the Green Office is responsible for operational implementation. The structure allows for “bottom-up” ideas but is also geared to dialog and taking decisions, and makes targeted use of existing expertise. The Green Office itself is also responsible for making and nurturing the contacts it needs to implement certain projects.
